Bienvenido al Superliga
By: Robert | July 30th, 2007I know reception for the Superliga has been lukewarm thus far but allow me to be one to jump up and say “NBA action its fantastic!”…I mean, “I love this league” (I don’t know why but that NBA joke makes me laugh, something about Billy Crystal and Penny Marshall looking into the camera and saying that phrase, heehee) I know the lack of TV coverage has been a bit discouraging but as a member of the media (I don’t mean this, I mean in my real job) I feel I have the proper authority to tell you that TV people are afraid of two things: success and failure, so while it may be sometime before these games receive the coverage they deserve, I like where this is headed.
The Superliga provides a chance for the best MLS teams to prove their worth against the best from south of the border; but more than that its an opportunity to stamp some legitimacy upon our young league (and the one mee-llion dollar prize money is nothing to scoff at either.) And while a strong showing (preferably ending in a Hoops victory) won’t end the derogatory chants, objects thrown at our players or the merciless boo-ing of Landon Donovan (why do they hate him so much?) and it won’t leave us best friends with the Mexicans, it will lead to a begrudged respect which at this point in time is a more valuable commodity than anything previously mentioned.
Americans love winners, so an FC Dallas victory would be the best thing to help market both Superliga and MLS (I know a D.C United win would do the same thing and a Beckham assisted LA Galaxy win would probably be even better for the league but I want the Hoops to lift the trophy, sue me (oh, and I don’t care enough about the league to root for Houston.)) So tune in or log on (the games are free online) and root for the Hoops to change the course of soccer in both our nation and Dallas where the FC stands for “fighting for a concept.”
HOOPS PRIDE!

you know, i’m a dallas resident and an FC dallas fan, but i’ve never understood the attachment to this ‘hoops’ nickname. it just sounds … silly, to be honest. i’ve heard the team referred to as the red-stripes, which doesn’t sound half bad to me, apart from being a beer reference. i don’t know who came up with the nickname, whether it be the team or the media, but it’s not one that i would have chosen as a fan.
i don’t know. i do appreciate your posts though, robert. very well written and insightful, for the most part, which is much more than one can say about many blogs.
cheers.

hoops is used because of the horizontal stripes on the jerseys. many euro teams use that name for the name reason. celtic is the biggest one that comes to mind. its just us trying to be like europe.
