Did you see that???
By: Robert | October 13th, 2007I know most of you spent Thursday’s ESPN MLS broadcast watching a fairly mundane 0-0 match but what I saw was far more interesting; FC Dallas played 90 minutes of competent defense. The Hoops did not allow a single quality goal-scoring opportunity to one of the most in-form sides in the league and even more impressively they rarely let Chivas have a look at goal. The defense played so well that I’m sure I saw keeper Ray Burse in background of one of the shots filling out grad school applications late in the first half. The Hoops much maligned defense was able to put together their first legitimate clean sheet since the end of August (the 2-0 Toronto match doesn’t count because TFC was in the middle of their “we couldn’t score in Vegas with 100 grand and a penthouse suite” period.)
I don’t want to jump to any conclusions here because it’s just one game and two of Chivas best forwards were on the bench until the 75th minute but there are definitely some positives to be taken from that game. Adrian Serioux controlled the middle of field stopping most forays into the Dallas half of the pitch and forcing the backline to engage in the occasional clean up duty for the few plays he couldn’t make. And while this performance does not immediately make me a believer in the backline again maybe I should think about rethinking my feelings on the playoffs.
I want to open the rest of this up to a couple of questions I want to ask:
1. I know it’s not possible to separate the Denilson name, legacy and paycheck from the man impersonating a great player on the field, but I want you to try. If his name wasn’t Denilson and he wasn’t the team’s highest paid player how would he really rate?
I personally doubt he’d be considered one of the team’s better players but maybe we’re being too hard on him.
2. Does anybody else feel that it’s only a matter of time until Eric Wynalda says something that either gets him fired or forces him to apologize on air?
That’s it for tonight, but I may go against personal rules and post on the weekend (I don’t usually because I try to fake having a life) until then in Dallas the FC stands for my feelings on the defense “flaky confidence.”

MLS borefest of the year. At least Arturo Alvarez showed some heart on offense. I hate Wynalda’s commentary. Why the hell does he have a job! He contributes nothing to the broadcast.

Yeah.. Most of the time Wynalda makes some half decent comments, but he was way off last night.
I think Denilson is showing steady improvement, but he seems to have only about 45mins of gas in him right now. There was some nice tackling, nice passing and some cute footwork. I don’t think he’s going to get a lot of shots on goal, he tends to attract defenders like flies on a dog turd… they know he’s dangerous and are not going to let him make a run on goal.
Every once and a while Wynalda says something controversial that really need to be said (and I give him Kudos for that).. but unfortunately most of the time he’s just full of crap and it would be better for him if he saved his comments for a bar.
And Yes, I agree that playing Serioux in D-Mid was a big factor. That was his best game all season. If he can play like that every game then we might be able to get something going here.
