Ramon Nunez is starring in an 8 Mile remake

By: Robert | July 5th, 2007

Before you jump up and down in shock, screaming “What?!?” at your computer, I don’t mean that literally, its symbolical of course. The only time Ramon Nunez has probably ever even been to Detroit was during a 2-hour layover on a trip to Toronto. But metaphorically speaking, yesterday Ramon Nunez ran through the lunchline of New Detroit Stamping (aka Chivas USA) an re-established himself as a force in the FC Dallas offense.

If you forgot who Ramon Nunez was you’ll not be remised, he’s been stuck to the bench for awhile; like Eminem in 8 Mile, Nunez began the season billed as the future of Three-1-third (FC Dallas.) He was a talented, attacking midfielder, around whom the offense was initially designed, because he was supposed to be able to create opportunities for himself and those around him. Unfortunately, like Eminem in the shelter bathroom, he spent the pre-season getting himself all fired up to show and prove, only to fail to impress anyone. The first few games of the season were spent with Nunez aggressively taking people off the ball, but leaving Carlos Ruiz un-involved plus, he was taking shots that could only be considered speculative at best. Ramon left coach Steve Morrow with no other options but to sit him down until he got his game together.

Nunez went back to the practice field to improve himself and his “1928 Delta,” so he could get back into the starting eleven (you have to admit this 8 Mile metaphor is almost seemless.) The critics were on him, they said he was too selfish for a team game and that he wouldn’t ever amount to much of anything (you gotta scroll down some to get to the FC Dallas part); Ramon Nunez worked hard, took it all in stride and just waited for his chance.

That chance came in the 11th minute of the game, the New Detroit Stamping lunchline battle started off with the normal back-n-forth, but early on Marcelo Saragosa was hurt in a viscious attack by Chivas USA forward Maykel Galindo. Unable to continue Ramon Nunez was forced to step in and make things right (I know that means that Marcelo Saragosa plays the role of “Paul the fruitcake,” but look past that because outside of the gay thing, this analogy is perfect.) From the moment he entered the pitch Nunez was dangerous; passing and moving, running at defenders, being the player that people thought he couldn’t be. And in the 41st minute Ramon cemented his return with his “Paul’s gay, you’re a f****t” moment and put in a beautiful left-footed drive from 20 yards out that would turn out to be the game-winning goal.

So is Ramon Nunez back for good? I don’t know, Mike from the lunchline is a little bit easier to beat than Lyckety-Splyt, Lotto and Poppa Doc. But it is a start for the man who had done nothing but collect bench splinters in four of the past five games. Hopefully it works out, because an attacking midfield of Nunez, Juan Toja and Arturo Alvarez would pose problems for any defense. Only time will tell if this will happen, but Ramon Nunez showed what he is made of against Chivas USA and that can only be good for the team; never forget this is Dallas, where the FC stands for “full of character.”
