Why coaching in soccer is important
By: Robert | September 25th, 2007I used to think that soccer coaches didn’t really affect the play of a game; I thought the guys on the pitch were all that were important to team success. The side either had the players or they didn’t, and while picking who plays and who doesn’t plays a part in the results (Most decisions are of the “duh” variety, but there are some that require inspiration,) ultimately the eleven men on the field determine the outcome. And while I still believe all of that, I’m learning more and more the significance of a professional soccer coach. But the more I learn the more I realize that Coach Steve Morrow is failing in his responsibilities to lead this team.
The FC Dallas defense has been at best poor, allowing an average of two goals a game this month. A stat that could easily be worse if Toronto, Seattle and the LA Galaxy weren’t inept in front of the goal (I know LA won, but with a man advantage for over an hour, given the chances they were given LA should have scored a lot more.) Everybody has seen the defense implode on itself over the past month and there have been no indications that an improvement is on the way. Getting the most out of players and putting them in position to be successful is the coach’s job and right now Steve Morrow is doing neither.
I have no idea on the fixes to the backline (left back is certifiable catastrophe) but it’s well past time the problems were solved. The defense actually played well in late June and early July when a hodgepodge of player alignments were racking up clean sheets. But today, outside of a few small knocks everybody is healthy yet these results seem to be more of an eventuality instead of a rarity. Solve the problem Steve Morrow, because right now in Dallas the FC stands for “flabbergasted continuously.”
