David Beckham is causing people to go crazy

By: Robert | July 31st, 2007

I understand, I really do, you work all day to scrape together a couple of dollars to do something special and when that special time comes around you don’t get half of what you paid for. I once had tickets to a Bulls/Pacers basketball game about a year in advance of tip-off because they were so hard to come by and by game time Michael Jordan had retired. So I empathize with the Hoops fans that sold out tonight’s Superliga game against the LA Galaxy in anticipation of seeing David Beckham play and now he won’t even be in attendance. But some fans are taking their anger a little too far.

You can’t blame FC Dallas for the well-being of player on another team, and even more than that injuries are an everyday part of sports. These things are unfortunate, but they happen. Allow me to use an analogy to make my point clear. These LA Galaxy are akin to this past seasons’ Miami Heat, two superstars and a bunch of bums (Sorry Laurie) and even though people may not remember, it ticket prices were raised for this past seasons’ Dallas Mavericks/Miami Heat game (if you’re really honest with yourself you’ll realize this happens for major teams across all sports: the New York Yankees for instance) and that NBA game was promoted as “Come see Shaq, Wade and the world champion Miami Heat” and when Shaq didn’t play nobody lost their minds. Now I understand that seeing David Beckham is much more a rarity than seeing Shaquille O’Neal and that the people that went to that NBA game may not be the same people trying to see FC Dallas but the analogy still holds. There’s still Landon Donovan, there’s still an important game to be played and you still can show up and have a very good time.

I know it seems like I’m in management’s pocket on this one but I’m not, trust me I’ll rip them a new one as soon as I see fit, but the truth is GM Mitch Hitchcock is doing the best he can with a bad situation. By offering first-choice tickets to those in attendance at a discounted fair he’s doing something most management teams wouldn’t do. I know there are fans that want their money back and I understand the sentiment, but unfortunately that doesn’t make fiscal or logical sense. When you purchase a ticket to a game you are obtaining ownership of a seat at a specific date and time in which to view said sporting event, Beckham’s absence doesn’t cancel the game.

I understand the anger, I really do and if you’re that upset show up and boo the Galaxy so mercilessly, because they denied you an opportunity to see David Beckham, that they’ll ask to play in Azteca stadium where the Mexican’s will treat them “nice.” Just don’t blame the Hoops on this one, especially not in Dallas where the FC stands for “friendly confines.”

HOOPS PRIDE!

In the banking industry we have found that a mistake is a great opportunity to “wow” a customer (even an uncontrollible mistake)! If FC Dallas is smart they will wow customers that were not able to see Beckham tonight! People should be saying things like, “Wow the NFL, NBA, NHL, and MLB would never do that!” It is somewhat tricky with this being the only LA Galaxy trip to Dallas. I would have an exhibition game (free tickets) with Beckham in Dallas where he meets and greets fans before the game and makes a few appearances in Dallas. Something big! FC Dallas is an important franchise!

Those talentless bums gave you guys 18 minutes worth of a schooling . . . man, I couldnt believe my eyes.

I was watching the game with people that know about as much of soccer as they would about antartic surf boarding. And THEY were in awe. They couldnt understand spanish, but REFUSED to turn the dial.

Great game. Awesome comeback on your parts. Toja is quite special. But something has to be done about the D . . . Bobby Rhine is looking like swiss cheese out there!
