Has David Beckham lost it already?

By: Robert | March 12th, 2008

David BeckhamLast year when the Beckham injury tour reached Dallas there was outrage in the local community that tickets had reached almost NFL levels while Goldenballs himself was unfit to play.

In the days leading up to the Englishman’s absence all the local newspapers ran stories about the beautiful game and whether David Beckham was really a soccer messiah brought here to save the sport from insignificance or if he was just another false prophet destined to fail at pushing the game from an activity of 7 year-olds on Saturday mornings to something of national interest.

In the wake of Beckham’s failure to board a plane, MLS made sure LA and FC Dallas would play an exhibition game at Pizza Hut Park this season to appease the locals and fill the coffers of the businessmen who lost out on pizza and beer sales plus parking fees from the match.

However the extreme notoriety Beckham achieved before the first possible meeting has been noticeably lessened ahead of his second coming. Forgive me if I have missed something but I have yet to see anything in the major papers about his Saturday arrival. In fact as kickoff gets closer tickets can be had on craigslist for increasingly less.

Yesterday 10AM
$200 for a pair of 3rd row seats at midfield

Yesterday 5:20PM$90 for a pair of 12th row seats at midfield

Today 1:06PM$40 for a pair of 19th row seats in section 110

First of all none of these are bad seats, and yes you could argue that the decreasing prices can be reflected in the relative closeness to the field, but even those that make that argument have to agree that $110 is a lot to pay (or not pay) for a nine row difference.

Has David Beckham dropped in popularity that much already that the media don’t cover him? Is the media just not doing its job? (although to defend my media brethren for a moment, we’re not supposed to be the marketing business) Is it only because this is an exhibition game? Is there another reason?

I don’t know the answer to this, but if Goldenballs reception this time around in Dallas is any indication of what’s to come this season LA may regret that $250 million real quick. (yes, I know its not a real $250 million)

Maybe the team was prescient in not pursuing another DP-level player right away because in Dallas we don’t want a situation where FC stands for “failed contract.”

HOOPS PRIDE!

UPDATE: I probably should have checked this earlier, but you don’t even have to buy tickets through Craigslist yet; the game isn’t even sold out.

In some ways I hope he has lost it already. I’m tired of the media circus and celebrity status that follows him everywhere. I just want to see the man play some brilliant soccer. And if the peripheral stuff calms down a bit then I think we’ll be seeing better soccer from him as well as more focus on the team.

Jen’s right – the rest of the MLS should hope that the celebrity show stays up as long as possible, because if it dies down, all you have left is the best assist man in the league, if he’s healthy. I personally agree that the celebrity insanity hurts him as a player, and I’d like to see him settle in, but we’ll see.
