Soccer America does not do research
By: Robert | August 28th, 2007This is not even funny anymore; actually this is downright embarrassing considering the source.
“…Denilson, who speaks English fluently and is every bit as effervescent as one would expect from one so breathtakingly brilliant, can dazzle on and off the field, which is what the DP rule is all about.” – Ridge Mahoney, “FC Dallas’ bet on Denilson makes sense”, Soccer America Daily, Aug 28, 2007
On the surface that’s simply a placid comment written by someone who desires to write something more relevant until you watch the Denilson press conference and realize what languages he does and does not speak fluently. Or you can just read the quote by Denilson from that very press conference.
“…the first thing I need to do is learn how to speak English to relate to my teammates and the rest of the world.”
Local newspapers (here and here) can be somewhat forgiven in their lack of knowledge about the beautiful game, but how can a website devoted to soccer, especially one that charges a subscription fee and claims to “better inform” make this kind of mistake. Think about it, why would anyone assume that a Brazilian, who’s lived in Spain, France and Saudi Arabia, can speak English? His passport alone should have prompted questions; instead Soccer America grabbed a couple press release quotes and didn’t bother to do any research. If they want to charge people to read a so-called quality product then something needs to be done to create a quality product, if not Soccer America is fleecing their customer base.
This is ridiculous to keep finding errors on basically the same story. I don’t know about where you live but in Dallas the FC stands for “freaking crazy.”
HOOPS PRIDE!

I’m American and i think everyone in Europe speaks English. I’m surprised to hear people like Ronaldinho, Zidane and Posh Spice not speak my language. They’re just ignorant.

Pre-internet and MLS I bought it almost out of obligation to keep some flicker of soccer alive… but Ridge Mahoney and Soccer America have basically been obsolete since the internet. Soccer America is low quality journalism and about a month behind.
