Superdraft Reactions: A day too late.
By: Harlan | January 15th, 2011It seems most years before this one, the MLS Superdraft was something of an event for FC Dallas, because we were usually looking at a pretty good pick close to the start of the draft. And while that may have been a good thing on draft day, I wouldn’t have traded our run last year to get stronger picks this year. This year, FCD sat late in the draft order, with the 17th, 35th, and 53rd picks. Here’s how it panned out:
Bobby Warshaw
1st Round, 17th Overall
DOB: 11-21-1988
HT: 6-0
WT: 185
Hometown: Mechanicsburg, Penn.
Position: Defender/Midfielder
College: Stanford
Charlie Campbell
2nd Round, 35th Overall
DOB: 1-15-1988
HT: 5-10
WT: 165
Hometown: Mundelein, Ill.
Position: Midfielder
College: Louisville
Scott Gordon
3rd Round, 53rd Overall
DOB: 4-6-1988
HT: 6-4
WT: 190
Hometown: Boca Raton, Fla.
Position: Defender
College: Lynn University
I have to be honest here, I didn’t know much about any of these guys going into the draft on Thursday. But the truth of it is…I’m not sure many people did. With the exception of Warshaw, the other two picks appear to have been taken as a “best player available” sort of strategy, rather than poised to fill any particular need going forward. Each has a tremendous amount of potential, but as always, that’s potential, and we’ll have to wait to see how it pans out.
As for Warshaw, he looks to be a steal at the 17th overall pick, and could potentially fill a need at defensive midfield, should Daniel Hernandez take an injury or need to be spelled. The scouting report on Warshaw says he’s a speedy guy, with “terrific soccer smarts, a really good work rate, positional flexibility, and above average skills.” I’ll be looking forward to seeing him in camp.
We’ll have to wait and see on these picks…but keep in mind we also have 3 more picks in next week’s supplemental draft.
