Team USA chose who?
By: Robert | June 25th, 2007That’s pretty much what I thought when I heard Drew Moor was chosen to play in the Copa America tournament. Don’t get me wrong it’s a great honor, I just didn’t think of Drew Moor (or any member of the FC Dallas defense for that matter) as national team quality (I know Chris Gbandi plays for the Liberian national team but I think we can all agree that their level of play and that of the US is not the same.)
I’ve discussed the FC Dallas defensive woes before and I didn’t expect anyone from a unit that until a few games ago hadn’t had a clean sheet all season and only one game ago was blitzed for four goals in Canada, to be chosen to represent our country. You have to ask “has Bob Bradley not seen our defense?” But in all honesty if you think about it, defensively, the whole has been less than the sum of the parts this season. Gbandi, Moor, Clarence Goodson and Alex Yi are all solid defenders they just haven’t worked well as a unit. But its obvious from the cross that led to Toja’s goal against Colorado and his diving header goal a few games prior that Drew Moor can go forward fairly well, it’s his defense that concerns me.

"Can he really do it?"
However, if you look at the US’ right back options you start to realize Drew Moor may be the best available; Jonathan Spector and Frank Simek have just finished long seasons in England and they need a break and Marvell Wynne may be a great athlete but even Bruce Arena knows he’s not ready to take that leap yet. So it’s Drew Moor even though he’s never even been in a senior national team camp. He’s going to learn a lot in just that first game alone (Tevez, Messi and Riquelme are all great teachers) and that should help the Hoops (Dallas edition) in the long run. So congratulations to Drew Moor and good luck in Venezuela, even though I’m shocked this is happening you can never forget this is Dallas, where the FC stands for “fortunate consideration.”
